SETUP


Drivers & Firmware


Drivers: (for both Windows & Mac) No driver is necessary to install for both Windows and Mac OSX computers. The OS will install the necessary drivers first time the unit is connected to the computer.

Firmware: (for both Windows & Mac) No firmware update is available at the time this manual was written, but it is advised to check for any updates at https://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/downloads/drivers-other-files/

VirtualDJ 8 Setup


Download and install VirtualDJ 8 from http://www.virtualdj.com/download/index.html (in case you have not done already)

Once VirtualDJ 8 is launched, a Connect Window will appear to choose one of the available ways to login.

A Pro Infinity, a Pro Subscription or a PLUS License is required to use the Traktor Kontrol S2 MK3. Without any of the above Licenses, the controller will operate for 10 minutes each time you restart VirtualDJ.

A detection window will appear next verifying the proper connection.
Click on the Use Soundcard button to allow VirtualDJ to auto-create the pre-defined audio configuration.

The unit is now ready to operate.


MIDI Operation.


The unit should be visible in the CONTROLLERS tab of Config and the “factory default” available/selected from the Mappings drop-down list. The factory default Mapping offers the functions described in this Manual, however those can be adjusted to your needs via VDJ Script actions.

AUDIO Setup


The unit has a pre-defined Audio configuration and a special button in the AUDIO tab of Config to provide that. The default audio configuration requires speakers to be connected at the rear-side Master RCA or 1/8" sockets and headphones at the front panel 1/8" socket.

DECK CONTROLS

1 PLAY
Play-pause left/right Deck
Plays-stutter left/right Deck from last paused position
2 CUE
When Deck is paused, sets a temporary Cue point and plays from that position while pressed.When playing, returns and stops to the previously set temporary Cue
Stops at the beginning of the track
3 GRID
Sets jogwheel to Grid Shift mode (LED will be turned on solid). Hold down for more than 1 second to set current's track position as first-beat
Sets jogwheel to Grid Adjust mode (LED will be flashing). Hold down for more than 1 second to re-analyze BPM and beatgrid (undo Grid manual adjusts)
4 JOGWHEEL
Touch-sensitive jogwheel to scratch, bend or adjust Beat grid.
When Vinyl mode is enabled, use the upper part of jogwheel to hold and scratch and the outer part to pitch-bend.
When Grid Shift mode is enabled use the jogwheel to move the Beat-Grid in time.
When Grid Adjust mode is enabled, use the jogwheel to adjust the width of the Beat-Grid (same as if you adjust its BPM)
Fast seek/search trough track
5 REV
When enabled, track will be playing in reverse and when disabled, track will resume playing forward from current position.
If Slip mode is enabled, track will be playing in reverse while the button is held down and when released, will resume playing forward from the position the track would have been if the reverse was never triggered.
6 FLX
Enable/disable Slip mode. When enabled, several actions such as Loops, Hotcues, scratching, reverse etc, will act temporary and when action is done, track will resume playing from the.position it would have been if the action was never triggered
Enable/disable Vinyl mode
7 BROWSE
Scroll through files or folders. Push to load the selected track in Browser to the Left/Right Deck.
Scroll fast (-/+10 files per click) through files or folders.
Push to toggle between Normal and Zoomed Browser views.
8 FOLDERS
Sets focus to the Folders List of Browser. If focus is on Folders List, open/close sub-folders.
Cycles through the available Mixer Panels (default GUI) Audio Mixer, Video Mixer, Scratch view and Master panel.
9 LIST
Sets focus to next available Browser Window (cycles though Folders, Songs and Sideview)
Cycles through the available Sideview Lists (Automix, SideList, Karaoke, Sampler and other cloned Folders (shortcuts))
10 SYNC
Press to match BPM and phase to the opposite deck (or Master-Deck if more than 2 are used)
Smoothly resets tempo to its original value
11 KEYLOCK
Enable/disable Key-Lock (Master Tempo). When enabled, track will retain its Key when Tempo is altered
Select next available %range for the Pitch slider
12 TEMPO
Adjust the Tempo of the playing track. When at middle position, track will be playing at its original tempo.
13 MOVE
When Loop is enabled, turn to move the loop backwards/forward in time by 1 beat per click.
Push: Manual Loop. Press once to set current position as Loop In (Start) position. Press again to set current position as Loop Out (End) position and create a Manual Loop. Press a 3rd time to exit the Loop.
Adjust the 1st Parameter of the selected Pads page.

14 LOOP
Halves/doubles the size of the Loop
Push: Auto Loop. Press to enable/disable an Auto-Loop of the selected size in beats
Adjust the 2nd Parameter of the selected Pads page.
Push: No action
15 PAD MODES
Select a mode for the Pads (see Pads for further details)

16 PADS
8 RGB Pads offering function depending on the selected mode (see Pads for further details)

MIXER CONTROLS

17 CROSSFADER
Blends audio between the left and right assigned decks
18 VU METERS
The Left/Right series of Leds indicate the pre-fader output level of Left/Right Deck.
19 VOLUME
Adjust the Output Volume of the Left/Right Deck.
20 CUE (PFL)
Select Left/Right Deck to send to the Headphones Channel for pre-listening.
21 MIXER FX PARAM
Adjust the 1st (Strength)) Parameter of the selected Color FX. When at middle position, no Effect is applied.
22 MIXER FX SELECT (1-4)
Select and enable/disable a Mixer (Color) Effect.
Button 1 : Filter, Button 2 - Echo, Button 3 : Noise, Button 4 : Flanger.
23 3 BAND EQ
Adjust the Low (Bass), Mid and High (Treble) Equalizer frequencies of the Left/Right Deck
24 GAIN
Adjust the pre-fader output level of the Left/Right Deck
25 QUANT
Enable/disable Quantize mode on both Left and Right Decks. When enabled, hotcues, play, loop etc will be snapped (quantized) to 1 Beat or other value as defined in the VirtualDJ globalQuantize setting
26 MASTER
Adjust the level of the Master Output (connection at the rear panel).
Hardware operation (output volume is controlled by the hardware), but position will be visible on VirtualDJ GUI (fake mode)
27 MIC
Turn Microphone input On/Off (connection at the rear panel). The volume of the Microphone Input is controlled from the rear panel
28 SAMPLER VOL
Adjust the Output Master Volume of the VirtualDJ Sampler
29 CUE MIX
Blends Master Output signal and audio signals from PFLed Decks to the Headphones Output. When at minimum position, only Decks that have the PFL/CUE enabled, will be heard to the Headphones. When at maximum position, only the Master Output will be heard in Headphones
30 CUE VOL
Adjust the Output Volume of the Headphones Channel (connection at the front panel).
Hardware Operation (Headphones Volume is controlled from the Hardware), but its position and value will be also shown at the VirtualDJ GUI (fake mode)

Press the HOTCUE mode button [M1] to set the Pads to Hotcue mode. The Hotcue Pads page will be also displayed on the GUI of VirtualDJ, reflecting the operation of the 8 Pads.

ROLL MODE


When in Hotcues mode, Press the HOTCUES mode button [M1] again, to set the Pads to Loop Roll mode (its LED will be flashing fast). The Loop Roll Pads page will be also displayed on the GUI of VirtualDJ, reflecting the operation of the 8 Pads.

Press and hold a Pad to trigger a Loop Roll of a pre-defined size in beats.. The track will resume playing from the position it would have been if the loop roll was never triggered.

Press the SAMPLER mode button [M2] to set the Pads to Sampler mode. The Sampler Pads page will be also displayed on the GUI of VirtualDJ, reflecting the operation of the 8 Pads.

Press Pad 1 to 8 to trigger a Sample (1 to 8) of the selected Sampler Bank (1st Parameter of Sampler Pads page) The sample will be triggered depending on the selected Trigger Sampler mode (2nd Parameter of the Sampler Pads page)
Stop the playing sample. Useful when the Stutter or Un-mute trigger mode is selected


*Note: If the selected Sampler Bank has less than 9 samples, both sides of the Pads will trigger the same samples. If the selected Sampler Bank has more than 8 samples, the left side Pads will trigger Samples 1 to 8 and the right side Pads will trigger Samples 9 to 16.




BEATJUMP MODE


When in Sampler mode, Press the SAMPLER mode button [M2] again, to set the Pads to BeatJump mode (its LED will be flashing fast). The BeatJump Pads page will be also displayed on the GUI of VirtualDJ, reflecting the operation of the 8 Pads.

Each Pad moves the track forward/backwards by the value in beats designated by the Pad's text on GUI. Different beat values can be applied by selecting a different page (1st Parameter of the BeatJump Pads page)

Hold SHIFT and then press the HOTCUES mode button [M1] to set the Pads to Cue-Loop mode (its LED will be flashing slowly). The CueLoop Pads page will be also displayed on the GUI of VirtualDJ, reflecting the operation of the 8 Pads.

Each Pad assigns or triggers a Hotcue 1 to 8 (if assigned) and at the same time enables an auto-loop at the Hotcue position of a selected size in beats. The track will not jump to the Hotcue position if later to current position

Hold SHIFT and then press the SAMPLER mode button [M2] to set the Pads to KeyCue mode (its LED will be flashing slowly). The KeyCue Pads page will be also displayed on the GUI of VirtualDJ, reflecting the operation of the 8 Pads.

Each Pad jumps to the currently selected Hotcue (or temporary CUE if no Hotcue is assigned) and plays and changes its musical key by a semitone value designated from the Pad's text as shown on GUI. Different values can be used by selecting a different page (2nd Parameter of the KeyCue Pads page)
Select a Hotcue for the KeyCue pads to apply to.
